about

The Doppelanzeige Quartett is a 4-system performance and experimental synthesiser, comprising of four Nintendo DS systems (NTR-001). Each system is specialised and programmed to execute certain code and programs to generate sounds of either a tonal or atonal nature, depending on the intentions of the performer/musician.
The Doppelanzeige Quartett was theorised in late-2019, first starting out as not a quartet of systems, but had a more flexible, contextual nature. Although concrete recordings of this time are non-existent, the earliest recording of a pre-conception example of the Doppelanzeige Quartett is a track from the album, Recovered Tapes, titled ‘t84y7oqi 13-10-20’, track 18, recorded on the 10th of October, and then realised and mastered on the 13th of October, 2020.

We live in a world where each and every conceivable and physical thing has a specialised function, and historically, that function only. This extends into the art of music as well. A piano is a piano, a guitar is a guitar, a violoncello is the older sibling of the viola, which is the older sibling of the violin. Although such a mindset rests on well-established rules of European Common Practice music and in general, it is a fixed mindset. If this was the only mindset we had, Aphex Twin would have never played a gig using only sandpaper and a food blender. Instead, he would’ve just used a computer…
I wanted to follow and continue the legacy of esteemed visionaries and artists in this field, modifying and using things that were not intended to make music, to make music. I first came across this idea from Sam Battle, an English musician from Manchester, better known as LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER (stylised). He created the Furby Organ, an organ where the pipes are Furby toys, and the Gameboy synthesiser, where each Gameboy was an oscillator. This caught my attention, and I was immediately intrigued.
My urge to create a new instrument was also inspired by esteemed Finnish physicist and musician, Erkki Kurenniemi, and a personal hero of mine, Daphne Oram, from the United Kingdom. The instruments they created resonated with me, and I loved the sounds they produced, such as Kurenniemi’s Andromatic, which was an experimental polyphonic synthesiser consisting of a grid and pins, and Oram’s Oramics system, which produced sound from cards with drawn illustrations on them.
I grew up with a Nintendo DSi, and I loved it. Mario Kart DS and Star Fox were my absolute favourite. However, I have always had a musical bone in my body, and I used the DSi’s sound application to create weird little tunes and sound experiments when I was 8 years old, before my older sister stole it. It wasn’t until much later in life (about 7 years later), I purchased a few cheap DS systems, and started tinkering with them, using flashcards and custom applications to create sound.
And now, with this creation of the Doppelanzeige Quartett (Dual-Screen Quartet), I shall now rule the world…
